Beaufort merchant's account book, 1785-1791.

Volume contains accounts of clients probably for the Beaufort (S.C.) store of John Mark Verdier. Accounts include entries for the sale of various types of merchandise such as cloth, clothing, sugar, brandy, books, nails, and other commercial items. Verdier also performed such services for his clients as paying church subscriptions and jail fees for Negroes. Accounts indicate that the London, the Friendship, the Hunter, the Salley, and other vessels traded at Beaufort (S.C.) and Port Royal (S.C.). The accounts are with over 200 individuals and firms including Smiths, DeSaussure & Darrell; Ball, Jennings & Co.; Bird, Savage & Bird; Jennings & Waldrop; and George Mosse & Co. Names of purchasers are kept at random for five months in 1785, then beginning in January 1786 they are entered alphabetically. At the end of each year are several pages of "interest accounts" which contain payments in cash, indigo, and rice.
